Description
ARMCHAIR S 35 N THONET ALL SEASONS
The lightness, dynamism and comfort of this Bauhaus cantilever chair make everything heavy and inert seem secondary. In 1930, the modern style of the S 35 was visionary.
Today, it is part of our lifestyle, which is marked by mobility and individualism. With the design of the S 35 chair, Marcel Breuer succeeded in transferring all the functions of a tubular steel cantilever chair into a single continuous steel tube construction, which also incorporates the armrests.
The designer thus achieves a double spring effect: the armrests swing independently of the seat and counterbalance the swinging movements of the cantilevered seat and backrest structure to the rear. For even more comfort, this chair is accompanied by a matching footrest, which also has a cantilever base.
The comfortable club chair S 35 made its first appearance in 1930 at the now famous presentation of the Deutscher Werkbund at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs in Paris. It was one of the pieces of furniture in a prototype apartment building designed by Marcel Breu- er in collaboration with Walter Gropius and Herbert Bayer.
