Among tubular steel furniture models, the S 32 cantilever chair is particularly versatile. It's at home in a variety of design worlds, integrating into resolutely modern interior design as well as a diverse mix that gives space to different eras and styles. The S 32 cantilever chair and the S 64 version with armrests are the best-known classics in tubular steel. The attractive combination of new and old contributes to their popularity: Thonet's tradition of producing bentwood furniture with characteristic Viennese wickerwork contrasts with the revolutionary use of tubular steel. The solid bentwood seat and backrest with wickerwork represent tradition, while the frame represents the present and future.
Thanks to their versatility, they became the best-selling cantilever chairs and still are today. Marcel Breuer designed the S 32 and S 64 during his stay in Berlin in 1928. Thonet has been producing both models since 1930. Because of their aesthetic reduction and clarity combined with the airy wickerwork, the classics fit into the most diverse environments, from conference rooms and waiting areas to restaurants and private residences.
